How To: View Full Email Headers

If you’ve received a scam message via email, please use the following instructions to forward us the information we need to trace the suspect.

Viewing Message Source/Full Headers in Gmail webmail

To view message source and full headers in Gmail’s webmail system:

  1. From the Inbox, open the message of interest.
  2. Click on the down arrow beside the Reply button in the upper-right corner of the reading pane.
  3. Select “Show Original” from the menu.
  4. A new window will pop up containing a lot of ugly text. This is the message source with full headers. Copy and paste everything on this page, and paste into a new message to forward to us.

Viewing Full Headers in Yahoo webmail

To view message source and full headers in Yahoo Mail’s webmail system:

  1. From your inbox, open the message of interest
  2. At the top of the screen, you will see a button marked “Actions” with a down arrow.
  3. Click the “Actions” button, and select “View Full Header”.
  4. A popup window will appear containing the full headers. Copy these and then close the window.
  5. Click the “Forward” button to forward the message, and paste the full headers in at the top of the new message.

Viewing Message Source/Full Headers in Windows Live/Hotmail webmail

To view message source and full headers in Hotmail/Windows Live webmail system:

  1. From the Inbox, open the message of interest.
  2. Click on the down arrow beside the Reply button in the upper-right corner of the reading pane.
  3. Select “View Message Source” from the menu.
  4. A new window will pop up containing a lot of ugly text. This is the message source with full headers. Copy and paste everything on this page, and paste into a new message to forward to us.
